 Little Bit O' Process

Unfortunately, I didn't preserve my pencil work at all-it tends to be extremely rough, basically just capturing gesture and composition. Actually it might be a good thing you don't see the pencil work, it's sort of difficult for anyone but myself to understand what is happening.

Pencils are then cleaned up with ink. This is about the time I'll scan and prepare for color in Photoshop.

For Knight of the Pawns, Kyle and I decided on a desaturated blue/green color. We felt as though it would help convey the theme of the story and really set the tone for the rest of the book. We are going to continue a limited color palette throughout the rest of the Canaan collection.

Next come the speech bubbles and the addition of type. For this part of the process we bring our colored page into Adobe Illustrator, which is a great program for this kind of stuff. Once the necessary information is added and the type is just how we want it, we will bring the page back into Photoshop for final tweaks and level adjustments. The example below is from page 16, hope you like it!
